Daven Hee’s ceramic works are wheel-thrown and sculpted. His vessels are not intended for utilitarian use, but rather “. . . to hold an idea, the idea of form and expression.” His vases, teapots, and vessels are the starting point to which Hee adds decorations such as curlicues, spouts, and bumps, so that the objects seem to take on a personality of their own. Included in this exhibition are a new series of whimsical ceramic vehicles that showcase Hee’s imagination and skill.
Currently, an instructor in art and ceramics at Mid-Pacific Institute in Manoa, Daven Hee received his Master of Arts in the Visual Arts from The Australian National University in Canberra and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Hee has been the recipient of numerous awards, most recently a second-place from Raku Ho‘olaule‘a 2007 at The Arts at Mark’s Garage, Honolulu and an Honorable Mention from the Japanese Chamber of Commerce’s Commitment to Excellence 2006 at the AMFAC Building, Honolulu. His works are in the collection of The Honolulu Academy of Arts; The National Institute of the Arts, Canberra, Australia; and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
