Middle Ground: Recent Paintings by Sidney Yee

Maui artist Sidney Yee will exhibit his recent paintings in the downstairs gallery at TCM at First Hawaiian Center. Yee often covers his large panels and canvases with a variety of materials including newspapers magazines, and comic books before applying paint. The resulting canvases, subtlety layered with textured surfaces hint at underlying histories and memories. Yee’s figurative and landscape paintings are highly personal reflections on his observations of daily life, family, and the constant shifts and changes to Hawaii’s landscape.
Yee grew up in Waipahu and graduated from the University of Hawai‘i, Manoa with a degree in secondary art education. He taught at Leilehua on Oahu, and ran the art program at Lahainaluna on Maui. He has completed commissions for the Kahului Airport and the Hana Community and School Library. His works are in the collection of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and Honolulu Academy of Arts.
